When Kiara asks for help, he can’t seem to deny her. Never would he imagine that he’d run into Kaleib, someone from his past--a vampire who knows his secret. — EXCERPT —

Trent
“I’ve met people more incredible,” I smirked insinuatingly. She blinked, taking a step back, never averting her dark blue eyes from mine. I wasn’t sure why I’d said that, I’d only just met her. How did I know whether she was incredible or not? But I was getting the distinct feeling that she was.

I grinned as I tore my gaze from hers. My eyes fell to a picture of Kiara and a young, dark skinned woman that was sitting on her bookshelf. I picked up the frame. “Who’s this?” I found that I just wanted to keep her talking. I liked talking to her.

“That’s my best friend, Sarah. I’ve known her since third grade.”

“You look close.” I envied that friendship.

“We are. She’s one of the few people who’s always been nice to me.”

I arched an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“Ever since elementary school, people have found me kind of…strange.” She shrugged. “Hell, most of them thought I was a freak. Still do. Sarah isn’t one of them.”

I pursed my lips and was poised to ask her more when there was a light rapping coming from the door. I held her gaze for a few more seconds before she wrenched her eyes away from me and turned towards her door.

“That’ll be Kaleib,” she said. I watched her walk away, my eyes taking in every curve of her body.

“He knocks? How quaint,” I said.

“He has a sense of courtesy,” Kiara called over her shoulder as she made her way down the short hallway to the stairs.

“He has a sense of boring,” I scoffed. She shot me a glare over her shoulder that I couldn’t help but smile at.

I peered through Kiara’s bedroom door, down the stairs. Kaleib stood in the doorway with his hands stuck in the pockets of his faded jeans. His light brown hair was brushed back and to the side. A button down shirt on. His features were less pronounced than mine. But I suppose I could see how some girls would think that he was handsome in his own way.

“I got your text,” he said, stepping past Kiara, climbing up the staircase. “Did you find out anything new?” He headed straight to her bedroom.

“Well, no. Not exactly. I…” Kiara shuffled behind him, trying to get there before he did.

Kaleib stopped dead in her doorway, face to face with me as he stumbled back a step. I balled my hands into fists and clenched my jaw, my teeth grinding together. I hadn’t seen him in so long. I thought that it would have been kept that way. Red flashed behind my eyes. I didn’t know what I expected to feel when I saw him but I wasn’t quite prepared. Besides the anger I felt surging through me, I also felt crushing guilt for what I’d done to him. I couldn’t bring her up though, I just couldn’t. I wasn’t even sure how much Kiara knew about that. I understood Kiara’s question about whether I’d been looking for her. Really, what were the chances that the witch I ended up meeting had Kaleib protecting her like an older brother most of her life?

“What is he doing here?” Kaleib asked, his voice dripping with the cold of icicles.

“Hello Kaleib.” I held out my hand with a cool smile, making a mental note not to break the bones in his hand. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”

Kaleib ignored the offered hand. “One hundred thirty-five years. And I would prefer it stayed that way.”

— ABOUT THE AUTHOR —
Amanda Leigh has had a love of words since before she could write them herself. Once she learned to read and write herself she just couldn’t stop. She reads any genre as long as the book sounds interesting. Which may explain why she can’t and never will be able to stick to one genre in her writing. From Contemporary Romance to Women’s Fiction to Paranormal Romance to Poetry and more to come. When she’s not writing or reading she enjoys getting swept away in a great TV show, going to the theater, listening to music, cooking and many different forms of art. She has a cat she adores and also loves Psychology, tea, coffee, chocolate and Elvis Presley. Not necessarily in that order. Feel free to get in touch with her.

by D.A. Roach
The Demon Hunters Series Book 2
YA Paranormal
Cover Designer: REDBIRD DESIGNS

Cassidy and her mystical ring are stuck in the middle of a battle between the Demon World and the Mortal Realm…

A conflict with the demons has left Killian, head of the Demon Hunters, injured and stripped of his powerful Demon Hunter tattoo. Cassidy is tasked with caring for him in the Human Realm until he is well enough to cross back into the Demon Realm. But soon she notices he is acting strangely and begins to suspect something is wrong.

She seeks help from Serena, a retired Demon Hunter, but it’s too late…

Cassidy returns home to find Killian has gone missing. Tyler, a friend with his own set of mystical powers, shows up to tell her that Killian is at his house demanding a meeting with the Demon Queen Rya. She and Serena have to work fast to find a way to heal Killian and get Cassidy’s ring away from him before Rya is involved. Meanwhile, Tyler and his dad have their own plan to make a deal with the Queen.

The Queen has a decision to make, but not before securing her leverage…

Rya wants time to consider the offer presented by Tyler’s dad, and takes Cassidy to the Demon Realm as collateral. The Demon Queen must choose between Tyler, the mate she was promised, and the mystical ring that was forged for her years ago.

Tyler is forced to face the inner demon he has worked so hard to restrain. Will he succeed, or will he be lost to the darkness, leaving Cassidy to be sacrificed by the demons?

As both sides gain alliances, the tension between the realms grows and the time for action draws near…

Synopsis:
At eighteen years old, Cassidy has suffered more loss than most…

At the end of her senior year, her boyfriend, Jace Peters, was killed in a car accident, and her grandmother died only weeks later of a heart attack. Emotionally lost, Cassidy desperately searches for an heirloom her boyfriend was wearing in the crash—her mother’s gold ring. But during her search, Cassidy discovers more than her ring.

She finds a gate to the Demon Realm….

A battle is brewing, and Killian—head of the Demon hunters—preps his Clan for the approaching conflict. They’ve been working to secure the gate between his realm and the mortal world. But it’s been nearly impossible since Rya—a voracious demon on a quest to expand her power—devoured the soul of his Clan’s necromancer. Now Rya is possessed with the necromancer’s powers and she may break through the gate at any moment.

Apparently Rya isn’t the only one Killian has to worry about…

When Cassidy accidentally crosses into the Demon Realm, Killian can’t understand how a human girl survived the transition. Now he has to find a way to return her to her own world, or risk her being caught in the crossfire, which is a complication he definitely doesn’t need.

Once back in the Human Realm, Cassidy readies herself for battle. She signs up for Krav Maga classes, where she meets Tyler Romaitis—a handsome, tenacious, humble guy. He seems almost perfect, but nothing is ever that easy.

And as the balance between good and evil shifts, Cassidy finds herself—and her ring—at the heart of the conflict for the survival of mankind.

Excerpt:

Last weekend, I had parked at the Raven Woods parking lot and walked across the busy four lane road to the small ditch on the other side. After an hour of searching the roadside without any luck, the sun had finally set and I’d realized that without the added light from the sun, there would be no hope in finding the ring.

As I walked along the guardrail back toward my car, I had heard footsteps coming from the trees several yards away. My eyes had searched the dark forest perimeter for the source of the sound. And then I’d seen him, standing at the edge of a small clearing in the wooded lot, looking just as I had remembered him. But it couldn’t have been. My eyes must have been playing tricks on me because the figure that had appeared before me had looked like Jace, and Jace was dead. The figure had darted off, twigs cracking as he retreated. Seeing him had stolen my breath away, both from fear and excitement. How could this be possible? I had wanted to chase after him, to gain a closer look, but the forest had been very dark and I’d neglected to bring a flashlight. If I’d known this area, I might have had the confidence to follow him, but having never had been here before, I hadn’t been able to muster up the courage to run boldly into the black forest ahead—not even for a closer look. Instead, I’d shouted his name over and over again.

***

That night, I was desperate to find the necklace that held my mom’s ring. Or Jace. I allowed extra time to search before the shroud of darkness set in. The first hour turned up nothing; I looked toward the horizon and saw the sun retreating as night began to set in.

To my left, a thick chain linked two wooden pillars, barricading a dirt path. A small metal sign hung from the chain: CLOSED. I sat down on one of the pillars to rest and stared down the overgrown path. Blaylock Grove. No sign told that the path beyond the chain led to the abandoned cemetery. But when I was growing up, kids told tales of people gathering here at night to worship Satan. The stories of this haunted cemetery and the rituals people did here, so close to my house, were eerie.

I looked to the spot I swore I’d seen Jace last weekend. There was nothing but trees and shadows. I wanted to see him again. I wanted him back in my life. Each day, I struggled to see the point in waking up and going through the motions when he wasn’t a part of it.

The sun moved down another notch in the sky and glinted off something in the weeds near my foot. I crouched down and saw the treasure I had hunted for. The necklace. I picked it up and studied it. The golden circle suspended from the chain looked like an ordinary ring. Upon closer inspection, there was an inscription on the inside that seemed to have a blue shimmer in the right light. I turned it around until the glowing inscription was easy to read.

fortitudine, et virtute

Gram said it was Latin for strength and power. I kissed the ring and clasped the chain around my neck. Jace had worn this the night he died.

I wrapped my hand around it, closed my eyes, and thought back to one of my favorite memories—the first time he told me he loved me. We had just watched the Blackhawks defeat the St. Louis Blues on TV and had begun arguing over who was the better defenseman. He had thrown a pillow at me and it had quickly become physical. We had wrestled and laughed till he finally had pinned me and said, “I love you, you stubborn and very wrong girl.” Then he had leaned in to kiss me.

“Jace.” A woman’s voice shook me from my memory. I looked around but did not hear or see anything. Could I have imagined it? The Blaylock Grove path was empty. The forest seemed quiet; not even a breeze blew. Across the busy road I saw my car; the thought of leaving now that I found the necklace seemed like a good idea. Female giggles came from behind me—behind the chain and down the dirt path. Dammit. The sky lost its light to a dim indigo, and curiosity got the better of me. I jumped the chain and set off down the dirt path.
