Rarity LIVE #MustRead

Title: Rarity
Author: D.A. Roach
Genre: YA Romance
Release Date: June 16, 2015

Brogen Mathers can’t deal with teen drama...

As an empath, she is constantly bombarded with other people’s energies. Despite coping techniques taught by her psychologist mother, it’s often too much to bear, forcing her to avoid most activities a typical high school junior would enjoy.

Jay Wilken won’t let his past define him...

A dead mother and an alcoholic father brought Jay to Stanton, but he doesn’t want pity. His good looks, charisma, and friendly nature quickly win over the whole student body, but he has his eye on one girl...Brogen.

Brogen can’t believe anyone could be so genuinely nice. It has to be an act, right? But when Jay literally saves her from deadly jaws, she has to admit he’s exactly what he appears, and he’s worth risking the potential emotional upheaval.

“Drama” might as well be Becca Grant’s middle name...

Another newcomer to Stanton, Becca’s blonde beauty and abundant attitude shoots her straight to the top of the popularity charts—and she believes Jay belongs right there beside her. Accustomed to getting exactly what she wants, she launches a relentless mean-girl campaign to shake up Brogen and claim Jay for her own.

Everything changes with a devastating diagnosis...

When Jay learns he has a rare and potentially fatal disorder, he keeps it secret and begins to push Brogen away to spare her future pain—which is exactly the sort of opening Becca is waiting for.

As Jay’s well-meaning deception unravels,

Brogen realizes there is much more than her heart at stake... But how far is she willing to go to fight for someone she loves?

D.A. Roach has been telling stories since she was a young girl in the suburbs of Chicago. In college she met the man of her dreams, her happily ever after, and married him 2 weeks after graduating. They have 3 kids together and a pet cockatiel named Gimli. D.A. did not find a love for books until after college. Her parents were immigrants from Lithuania and found tv and radio easier ways to hear stories so they did not do much reading or encourage it. But once she finished college and D.A. had free time, she discovered how amazing it was to get lost in a story.

D.A. is a full time mom and wife. When she is not doing domestic things (laundry, bills, etc) she is writing, reading, creating mixed media art, and helping beautify her kids' school landscape. Oh, and she is ALWAYS listening to music. Her favorite authors include Rebecca Donovan, Richelle Mead, Larissa Ione, Stephanie Meyer, E.L. James, and Sylvia Day. Reading great works from authors like these has motivated D.A. to write her own stories. She hopes to make positive changes in the world with her art and writing.

How to celebrate a book release

Rarity is out tomorrow.  I am excited and nervous about the release but it is also very surreal. What am I supposed to feel? How do you launch a book?

I had previously self-published 4 books with the help of Createspace.com and some friends.  They all received decent reviews (4 1/2 stars on average) but I wasn't sure how else to market the books and get more eyes on them. I was then approached by a UK publisher who was interested in my books. I don't think we were the ideal fit for each other, but it did get me thinking more about traditional publishing.  This led me to looking into publishers and sending my MS (Manuscript) to Limitless Publishing.  They had many authors within the same genres as myself, the covers were amazing, the reviews were excellent...sounded like it was worth trying.

Rarity was accepted within the week and I signed the contract to begin this new adventure in life.  So far, it has been a very cool journey.  Working with the Limitless Team has helped me polish the book and put an amazing cover on it.  I also have met some kind authors who have wise advice and are so incredibly supportive.

So what am I supposed to feel?
Honestly, I'm all over the place.  My family is pretty mellow so there are no fanfares or fireworks. But it IS an accomplishment.  So I made plans to meet with a dear friend I met online a year ago. Tomorrow we will meet, face to face, for the first time ever and enjoy some vietnamese food.  She is an amazing artist and a fun and kind soul.

I want this book to do well.  I want it to succeed for my vEDS family and for my own personal future.  I'd love to continue writing for Limitless but Rarity has to do well if they are going to consider future books.  I struggle with believing in myself and this whole journey has been like me standing at the top of a high dive, telling my petrified self "JUMP! Tamp down those fears." And my inner self saying "Yeah right - too scared."  One day I'll realize that I took the leap, survived and want to do it again and again.

How do I launch a book?
Well, there are many ways to do this.  I recently went to an author release party on facebook for Tressa Messenger.  I had never heard of this style of party before but it Was very fun.  She had several author friends take over 1/2 hr time slots on her facebook page.  In that half hour you could talk about your own book as well as give fun facts about the author or her book, and host a game (like How Many Words Can You Make with the Letters in D.A. Roach?)  The winner would then earn a small prize such as a $10 gift card to amazon.com or some other small gift of that authors choosing.

But for my release, I opted for 2 blog tours and a release day blitz.  The release day blitz is where bloggers post info about my book and links for where readers can purchase it.  The blog tours are where bloggers that sign up for the tour get an advanced copy of the book (also known as an arc) for free and post a review of the book on their blog.  Hopefully I'm doing enough to launch it and hopefully it is well received by the public.

Wish me luck, it goes live in less than 2 hours!

Jack is her 19 year-old boyfriend, a former trouble-maker who is back on track and trying desperately to graduate. His plans did not include falling in love with psychic trouble-magnet.

Just last month they worked together to save a friend in deep trouble and ended up exposing a steroid ring at their school. Now there’s a new guy at school who seems just a little bit too interested in Ally for Jack’s liking. And why does Ally keep dreaming about a kidnapping? “Ally? Hey, what’s up? You got real quiet all of a sudden. Not a good quiet, either. What are you thinking?”
I shook my head. “No, it’s nothing. I get it. I understand.”
He looked at me for minute and then sighed. He got up and came around to my side of the booth and took me in his arms and kissed the top of my head. “You’ve got that look on your face. You know, the one that says you think I’m not going to be able to handle any more weird stuff and this is it for us. Huh? Admit it—it’s what you were thinking, isn’t it?” I nodded, trying to keep the tears in. “Okay, look at me.” He pulled my face up to look directly in my eyes. I could stare into his beautiful, deep brown eyes all day. “First, and most importantly, I love you, Ally. I’m in this for the long haul, no matter how freaky things get. If it means I get you, then count me in. You gotta start believing in us, babe.” He stopped to kiss me briefly and thank the waitress for refilling our coffee cups. “Secondly, you’re giving me, and all guys in general actually, way too much credit for deep thinking. When I say ‘what the hell is an oracle?’ that’s all I mean. No hidden meaning. I just want to know what it is. Guys are actually pretty simple and we tend to say exactly what we mean.” He kissed me again and then returned to his side of the table, placing a napkin in my hand so I could mop my face. Poor guy: it seems like all he ever did was watch me cry. I was such a girl. “Now let’s finish eating while you tell me all about this oracle stuff, okay?”
So I wiped my eyes and told him about how the Seer Council had tricked me into believing they were simply a group of innocent little old lady gardeners, but they actually held my fate in their hands. I told him about the last Oracle being stolen away from her people by the Gaulish clan, never to be heard from again. And I told him how the council was very interested in my abilities to see the future and seemed to think it was possible evidence of my oracle-ness or whatever. I finished with, “And they didn’t want to even let me go. They made me promise to come back over spring break and in the summer.”
“Spring break? Ah, Ally, no. I can’t stand not having our last school vacation together. You gotta tell them no, querida. I’ll probably go nuts if you’re gone.”
“Don’t worry. There is no way I’m going back over spring break. I’ll go in the summer as long as it’s while you’re gone to basic training.” I grabbed his hand across the table and rubbed my thumb over his knuckles. I told him what the council had told me about oracles, how they were messengers between worlds or something.
“Ally, what do you think? Do you think you could be this oracle?” He looked at me with concern.
“I don’t know, Jack. I think there’s a lot more to the story than what they’re telling me. I don’t trust those little old garden-seer ladies. I can’t even think about being an Oracle before I know what’s really going on.”
“That was a very Oracle-like thing to say,” he said with a laugh.
“Shut up.” I smiled. “Does this lunch include pie?”

It was time to pull myself together and slink out of this bathroom to face Jack; if he was even waiting for me. He most likely lost interest and retreated back to class. I splashed water on my face and tried vainly to tame my obnoxious, curly red hair and exited the bathroom. To my surprise, Jack was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, staring at the ground. He looked up and smiled slightly at me, one corner of his attractive mouth inching higher than the other. His big, nearly black eyes were full of concern as he asked, “You feeling better? I thought maybe you were gonna puke all over the place back there.”
Perfect. Exactly what I wanted him to think of in connection with me: the girl who looked like she was going to puke. “No, I’m fine. I needed to get away from the Wikipedia re-hash, that’s all. Thanks for the escape.” I tried to scoot by him.
He laughed a bit under his breath and reached out, gently grabbing my arm as I passed. “Hey, don’t run off. You looked really upset. I want to make sure you’re all right. Besides, Ms. Gonzalez thinks we’re at the nurse. No need to rush back for more coma-inducing book reports. I’m Jack, by the way. Jack Ruiz.” He pulled me directly in front of him and again examined my face. An intoxicating aroma wafted to me from his warm skin; a sort of warm, spicy scent that instantly became my new favorite. I might have swayed toward him a bit.
“Yeah, I know, Jack. I’ve been handing your papers back all semester.” I struggled to sound unaffected.
He nodded. “You still look really pale, Ally. And you seem a bit unsteady. Sure you’re not gonna puke?”
Really? Why me, God? I stood up straight and gently shrugged off his hand. “Yes. I had a, uh…a moment. I’m okay. Thanks for getting me out of there.” His dark eyes looked like melted dark chocolate. Life is so not fair. On the bright side, he actually knows my name. I wouldn’t have bet on that. I’m not the kind of girl who stands out—well, except for the crazy red hair—or attracts much attention. I’m short and small, wear really plain clothes, and I don’t say very much at school. I have a few good friends and we pretty much fly below the radar and try to stay out of the limelight. I like it that way. High school seriously sucks and I just want to get through it quietly and without a lot of drama. Please, God, life will be better in college.
“So, this is gonna sound pretty weird,” Jack started hesitantly, “but, uh, when it got really hot in the classroom, it, well it kinda felt like it was, uh, emanating from you.” He laughed once, quietly. “That’s crazy, huh?”
Wow. Did he just use the word “emanating” in a sentence? Who does that? I mean, in high school? I wonder what he got on his ACT? I had always had the sense there was more to him than meets the eye, and this cemented that feeling.

Pink and orange hues filled the sky with awarm beauty while the sun set. Holly wrapped her arms around herself and liftedher face toward the sky to soak in the last few moments of the sun before thechill of the night descended upon them. This was definitely not going to be aneasy talk to get through. She just hoped they’d both be okay when it wasdone.  Zander stepped up behind her, andshe felt the heat of his body before he wrapped his arms around her frombehind. The way she was drawn to him made her wonder if he had a magnetic pull, and it kind of scared her a little bit. Holly tried to enjoy the view as theywere silent for a few moments.
“As much as I hate to let go, I think maybe weshould sit so we can finally talk,” Zander said.
Shehesitated a moment before taking his hand while they walked back to his houseand sat beside each other on the patio. Thisis it.
“First, I want to clear up earlier,” Zandersaid. “She was just a friend, nothing more. She has only ever been a friend.”He lifted their linked hands and kissed the top of hers.
“This isn’t any of my business, but does sherealize that? I got the impression there was much more than a friendshipthere.” Holly held her breath and didn’t exhale until after he answered her.
“Not for a really long time, and we were nevera couple.” His posture slumped. “Before today, I hadn’t heard from her inmonths. She just showed up out of the blue, but I swear nothing happened.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Holly shiftedto face him. “So you and she were friends with benefits a while ago. I have toadmit I didn’t like seeing you with her, but I don’t have any right to be mad. We’re taking things slow, remember?”
“That’s just the thing. I want to be with you,Hol. As in, I’d be staking my claim. You’d be my girlfriend, exclusive.”
“I’m actually kind of glad you said that. I’verecently figured out that I’m not made for casual.” She bit her lip nervously.“I don’t even care about your friend anymore because I sort of have some hugenews, which throws going slow out the window anyway. That is, if you don’tfreak out and feel like you want nothing to do with me after this.”
“Okay, now you’re making me nervous,” he jokednervously and playfully nudged her with his shoulder. “What’s up?”
“You probably should be.” Holly smiled weaklyand then exhaled long and hard. “I didn’t want a relationship when you cameinto the picture, and I didn’t want to care for someone so much. But then thereyou were all sweet, caring, and persistent and screwed up my original plans. Solet’s get that out there.” She smiled and leaned into him. Her head lay on hisshoulder and she looked up at him needing to be close. “That’s the best part bythe way because I’m glad I’ve let you in. I care for you a lot. I’ve messed up,though. We both have. Do you remember the night at my sister’s?”
“How could I forget?” His eyes lit up and shesnorted.
“It was a good night, huh?” She licked herlips just thinking about it. “Well, I haven’t been feeling like myself lately,so Lauren decided to take me to get a checkup…”
“O-okay, you were sick and…?” Zander’s browsscrunched together in confusion, but as if he sensed her discomfort, he gaveher a quick reprieve to pull herself together before she had to spit out thebig news. He captured her mouth. His soft, plump lips caressed hers, then hemoved to nip and suck on her bottom lip. His tongue coaxed her mouth openfarther, and she tasted his mutual arousal as he probed the slit of her mouthwith his tongue. One of her hands fisted in his shirt and held him closer, while the other massaged his nape and into his hair. They both moaned in theheat of the moment, and she could feel his chest rise and fall more rapidlybefore he pulled away.
“God, I’ve missed this,” he said. “You getsick again and I’m coming over with some chicken soup and taking care of you.
“That sounds amazing.” She smirked. “I’vemissed you too.” Holly shifted so that she was facing him now and rested herforehead against his while they caught their breath.
“Don’t go home yet. Call Lauren and let’srecreate that night.” He wiggled his eyebrows up and down.
“You are such a goofball. As tempting as thatsounds, I need to finish what I was saying before you distract me too much.”She gave him a quick peck on the lips and leaned back.
“But the distraction is so good. I can’t helpmyself.” He lifted a sexy, dark eyebrow in question. “Can we fool around a bitwhile you talk? I’m a great multitasker.”
“I’ll tell you what, if after I tell youeverything I need to, you still want to fool around or more, then yes, we’ll goinside your place and I’ll make it worth your while.” She wiggled her browsback at him and smiled as she caressed the side of his face. I just hope I don’t ruin things first.
“Deal.”
“Lauren might not be too happy if she findsout the truth.”
“Really?” He looked at her in shock. “I findthat hard to believe after her and Shelby practically pushed us together.” Hesmiled and kissed the back of her hand. “Remind me to thank them for that oneday.”
“Ireally hope you still feel that way after you hear what I have to say.”
“Quit stalling and just tell me already.”
“So you know I haven’t been feeling welllately, but what you don’t know is why she’s been on my case. She had someconcerns that drove her to take me to the doctor in the first place.” Sheleaned way back in her chair and closed her eyes.
“Is she still hung up about the newapartment?”
“In a way, I guess, but right now what’sbothering her is her assumption that I might be pregnant.” She peeked in hisdirection to gauge his reaction.
He stiffened a bit on the seat next to her andsat straighter. “Wait, what?”
