R is for...Rarity

R is for...Rarity.

First cover - my drawing & pic of Soren
Rarity is my first published novel with Limitless Publishing. It was originally self-published but was accepted by Limitless and received new edits and an awesome cover. My son was diagnosed with a rare and life threatening genetic disorder. But now that we know he has this condition, we can make good choices to keep him safe, have him monitored, and take meds to prevent some of the complications.

Is he cured? No.

But there is hope on the horizon with amazing treatments like CRISPR (genetic editing). So what about those that aren't diagnosed? Great question. There are so many patients with the same condition as my son that have not been properly diagnosed. So even if a cure exists, if they aren't diagnosed...it does them no good.

2nd Cover

So my goal was to use my talents (writing) to educate others about Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.  Rarity is a book about a teen diagnosed with this disorder and the emotional rollercoaster that all involved endure. I wrote it based on my own emotions from my son being diagnosed. It's a young adult book, the characters in it are in High School, a time when kids are very much thinking about themselves and how things will impact them. At the back of the book, there is information about the disorder and signs and symptoms to consider. My hope is that someone reading it may have a lightbulb go off and a proper diagnosis can be made on someone not previously diagnosed.

I thought I'd show some of the covers for it as it evolved for your viewing pleasure.

Final cover - published with Limitless Publishing

G is for...Genetic Mutations

G is for...Genetic Mutations.

In pharmacy school, very little was taught to us students about genetic mutations. My only conversations about mutations were when I talked about the X-men movies. But 3 years ago, my 4 year old was diagnosed with a rare and life threatening disorder, Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It's a mutation of the COL3A1 gene, or in simpler terms, a collagen disorder. VEDS  is like having your body be made with faulty glue. While most people have 100% strong glue, VEDS patients have just 15% strong glue...in EVERY cell of their body. Skin tears easily, organs tear or rupture easily, blood vessels develop aneurysms or may dissect, and the cherry on this sucky diagnosis...surgery is dangerous and reserved only in life saving measures. For some reason, when a VEDS patient is hurt, injured, sick - the body goes into this "inflammatory state" where white blood cells head to the injury to try and repair it, but this inflammatory state makes the glue turn to water and VEDS patients fall apart in their surgeon's hands, many do not survive.

Image result for x-men
VEDS is "rare" but is it really? It is so frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed throughout the world that it is estimated that only 5% of people with EDS (the common and less deadly form) have actually successfully been diagnosed. The other 95% do not know they have it. The VEDS population represent a small amount of that number but VEDS can easily be ruled out with a blood test if doctors suspect it. The numbers are shocking and appalling.

Common VEDS signs and symptoms:
-flat feet
-bendy finger joints
-low muscle tone
-veiny chest
-bruises easily or skin tears easily
-family history of early death or aneursyms
-sleeps with eyes open

Unfortunately VEDS patients often experience their first vascular event in the twenties and the average life expectancy is 48 years old. However, many have died in their teens and young twenties and several have lived into their 50's and 60's.

We take our son to see the top doc in this field at Johns Hopkins Hospital every other year. We have him on the medicine they hope will prevent some of the issues and every fall we give a talk at the local med school to educate them on the disorder.

I also wrote a YA romance called Rarity to raise awareness about the disorder. One of the characters gets diagnosed with it and it complicates their relationships. Here's the link to buy Rarity if anyone is interested in giving it a read. http://amzn.com/B00YTETSGK

Where do we go from here?
Onward and upward toward a cure. No, you did not mishear me...a cure. There is a new procedure that has been developed to splice out the gene mutation and recode it with the corrected gene information. This procedure is known as CRISPR. It works on EVERY cell in the body. Scientists all over the world have begun human testing with fantastic results (cured leukemia in a child, muscular dystrophy, genetic blindness to name a few). So my challenge now, is to shine a light on VEDS so that researchers become interested in testing it on this rare disorder.

My son is now 7, soon to be 8. I'd love for him to have a chance to live a "normal" life, to not worry that playing football with the kids at recess might kill him. To not worry about lifting something heavy (may cause aortic dissection). Here's to hoping we can get this cured before it's too late.

★•✩•★ What reviewers are saying... ★•✩•★

“It is a beautiful, true to life story where the author teaches many invaluable life lessons. Whether it is about true friendship, or figuring out what truly matters and is important in this world. The characters are compelling and relatable. This book takes you on a teenager's journey through overcoming fears, heartaches, hardships, emotional struggles and dealing with life's adversities. It's these life experiences, the people we meet along the way who help to shape us and make us stronger and into the people that we are meant to be in this world.”
– By CMB-DDB on September 20, 2014

“It isn’t a pretty little love story that follows the path of boy meets girl and life moves along merrily. They are real characters with realistic emotions. As a reader I was drawn deep into them, feeling anger, joy and fear as the story progressed. The author painted a realistic picture of living through a life changing diagnosis.”
– By Domi_Blue on July 29, 2015

“RARITY by D.A. Roach was like a breath of fresh air. I’ve been quickly becoming a huge fan of YA Romances, and DA Roach solidified it. Her writing style was so easy to follow and connect with, that I could not help but love it. If you’re a fan of Young Adult novels, you really need to pick this one up!”
– By HEA Bookshelf on July 24, 2015

“I do want to thank D.A. Roach for writing such a unique and informative book in a way that you don't even realise it until afterwards. This is a complete page-turner that will grip you from the first page to the very last. Absolutely fantastic and the epilogue at the end was a perfect way to finish.”
– By Merissa (Archaeolibrarian) on July 2, 2015

“If I were to fill this entire review with WOW ... would you like it? Rarity pulled on my heart strings like you cannot even imagine. I laughed, I cried, I awwwed and I cried some more. There are so many emotions in this book that are truly hard to evoke from a reader, knowing that it is a story.”

★•✩•★ D.A. ROACH ★•✩•★

D.A. Roach has been telling stories since she was a young girl in the suburbs of Chicago. In college she met the man of her dreams, her happily ever after, and married him 2 weeks after graduating. They have 3 kids together and a pet cockatiel named Gimli. D.A. did not find a love for books until after college. Her parents were immigrants from Lithuania and found tv and radio easier ways to hear stories so they did not do much reading or encourage it. But once she finished college and D.A. had free time, she discovered how amazing it was to get lost in a story.

D.A. is a full time mom and wife. When she is not doing domestic things (laundry, bills, etc) she is writing, reading, creating mixed media art, and helping beautify her kids’ school landscape. Oh, and she is ALWAYS listening to music. Her favorite authors include Rebecca Donovan, Richelle Mead, Larissa Ione, Stephanie Meyer, E.L. James, and Sylvia Day. Reading great works from authors like these has motivated D.A. to write her own stories. She hopes to make positive changes in the world with her art and writing.

Our Stories of Strength review & interview!

Having a child that was diagnosed with a rare disorder, Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, has been a life changing experience.  One of the challenging aspects of being diagnosed with it is finding a support system, people with like minds who face similar challenges.  We find support in online groups and within our personal family but outside of that, it can feel pretty isolating.  Recently a book entitled Our Stories of Strength was released - it too has helped us feel not alone in our journey.

Our Stories of Strength is a fascinating book that I hope all doctors, med students, teachers, therapists, and patients with silent disorders pick up.  It is a collection of personal stories from patients that are challenged with various types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.  The stories are not depressing but rather show how each patient overcame the difficulties they faced - how they rose above a diagnosis and it's limitations.  The stories are told by children and adults - the editing is spot on, and the photos and drawings make the stories that much more endearing.  The book is an enjoyable collection of the strength of human beings in the face of physical and emotional challenges.  You do not have to have EDS to benefit from this book, it will encourage strength in all who read it.

Pick up Our Stories of Strength, it's an inspirational eye opener! http://amzn.com/B00X8TG60I

I had the chance to interview the creators of this anthology.

Tell me a little about your book:

Our Stories of Strength - Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome was an idea to share good news stories of those who were living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and who found ways to persevere. Because I sit in the middle ground of volunteer work with EDNF, working in the medical field & also my own personal experience, I felt like so much of what was known to those who were newly diagnosed, was scary, sad and depressing. However, I knew that there were many other stories like mine, stories from so many others who were also living well with EDS and felt like they needed to be shared. I couldn’t help but think that if these stories were shared, that those who were feeling hopeless, depressed and overwhelmed, would feel a sense of hope, strength and determination to persevere.

How long was the process of creating this book? (from first concept to published book)

I met Mysti via twitter in May 2104 when I was recruiting for the EDS Ride for a Cause. In July, we had been talking back and forth via twitter and then over the phone. It was one day while sitting in my car in front of my house that I said, “We should write a book!” I suggested that we marry her experience as a writer and my experience working within the EDS and medical communities, as well as our joint passions for health and wellness, and create a book that shared these good news stories that we both knew existed - including our own.

In October of 2014, we began working more consistently on our idea, as well as putting together an overall business plan of how to approach the EDS Community. In November, we started recruiting for stories and I asked Dr. Francomano if she would write the forward. In January - Feb. 2015, we launched our website and became more active via social media. We also decided to make Our Stories of Strength a series of anthologies and discussed other titles in this series.

In April, we applied for our LLC, while also finalizing all story submissions. We also contacted other people who are community leaders for quotes to include on the back of the book and worked closely with Kristi on refining the cover design.

We were blessed to have several people devote their time and experience to this project, including Kristi who also lives with VEDS and is an incredible graphic designer and a professional editor, who helped edit the entire book before publishing.

Our deadline was always May, in order to publish in conjunction with EDS Awareness month. The digital version of Our Stories of Strength - Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome was published on May 8th - hitting our target deadline. The print version was published one month later in the beginning of June 2015.

In total, we worked consistently for about a year from idea to publishing. We are have been and continue to actively recruit for all 40 titles in the Our Stories of Strength anthology series.

What has been the biggest struggle in making this book come to life?

Our biggest struggle by far was learning to pace ourselves and learning how to balance pushing ourselves when needed, while also accepting that as long as we are taking baby steps, we were still moving forward. To look back and remember all that we personally went through (taking care of our kids, our own health struggles, other jobs & more), it’s amazing to that we still made our deadline.

What have you enjoyed the most about creating this book?

Personally, I’ve enjoyed seeing an idea coming to life and validate the very reasons I felt that sharing these stories was so important to our community. I’ve also enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone who submitted and all others who are working to make a difference in our community. We really are stronger together.

Do you have plans to create more books? If so, do you have your next one in mind?

See question number 2. As of right now, it seems that our next anthologies will be our Gastroparesis, Dysautonomia/POTS and Fibromyalgia anthologies. We also have a number of stories submitted for our second living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome anthology; however, we would also like to do an anthology focused on Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. With each anthology, we partner with a non-profit within that community and we have activity been in discussions with people within the various chronic illness communities that we are recruiting for (i.e. thyroid, chronic pelvic pain, chronic pain with kids, mast cell activation disorders, etc.).

What was your biggest influence/support for your book?

For me, my biggest support and influence has been all those who I’ve worked with within the EDS community, my own children and the physicians who devote their lives to caring for us. Dr. Francomano has been a huge sense of support for me for a number of years, as has Dr. Streeten from University of Maryland, Dr. Pocinki & recently, Dr. Afrin. Shane and Lauren at EDNF have also been incredibly supportive over the years. And of course, I couldn’t do any of this without the support of my husband. He’s never questioned anything that I’ve done, why I want to do it and the importance of it.

I’ve also been blessed to be included in other EDS projects - both healthcare providers and other members of the broader EDS community.

Have you heard positive feedback from readers about your book affecting their lives in some way? I would imagine that you will hear some of that as your stories are inspirational.

Yes and Yes! We’ve received incredible feedback from those within the EDS community, those who submitted stories, those outside of the community and from various healthcare professionals. It’s been quite humbling.

If you won the lottery tomorrow and suddenly were $5,000,000 richer, what would you do with your money?

Not look at my bank account for a year and have someone else manage it. ;) I would take a huge deep breath and continue to do all that I do now, only from living somewhere near the beach. For me, money isn’t about quitting work, it’s about being able to do what you love and love what you do every day. Working provides purpose, direction and a sense of responsibility — all things I think are crucial for children to learn as they grow up. Life isn’t given to you - it’s earned. No one owes us anything and one thing I’ve learned that is that, you can never take anything for granted. Anything an happen. Anything, to anyone and at any time.

Thank you Kendra and Mysti for creating this much needed book and for taking the time to be interviewed! Here are some helpful links and info to follow the work Kendra is continuing:

Exciting new EDS book & interview to come

Those of you that have read Rarity will understand that Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is a cause dear to my heart. VEDS is the rare and deadly form of EDS. But people who suffer from the other types of EDS are often plagued with pain, dislocations, POTS, dysautonomia, and other "invisible" issues. EDS is one of the most undiagnosed disorders in the world. It is thought that just 5% of EDS patients have actually been diagnosed...95% are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Because those with VEDS and EDS often look normal it is hard for others to appreciate the challenges they face on a day to day basis...until now. A good friend of mine teamed with another author and created Our Stories of Strength. It is first hand accounts of people and their strength as they face the many struggles
presented to them each day.

I'm pleased that the authors, Mysti Reutlinger & Kendra Neilsen Myles will be interviewed with me soon. I hope you all take the chance to read this book and see what incredibly strong people it takes to handle this chronic disorder.

Our eyes were locked on each other, and I was glad to see he seemed lighter. He took a step closer, closing the space between us so our bodies were touching each other. I felt my heartbeat quicken, and butterflies fluttered about my stomach. This was an intimate space, and he clearly entered it. The air between us changed, it was more electric. He put his hands on each side of my face, and then gently but possessively, he took my mouth against his. He kissed gently at first, and I felt my knees grow weak. His lips were soft, and his breath was hot. I let my mind go and became enveloped in the overwhelming love that Jay exuded. He urged my mouth open and our kiss became more intimate. I felt the heat rising in my cheeks and followed Jay’s lead. His hands trailed down my arms and wrapped around my torso. The kisses returned to gentle nibbles, and then to sweet pecks before he pulled away to look at me. All traces of sadness were gone from his face, from inside of me. There was light and love there instead. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time,” he said.

Things always looked different the next day. Skies seemed bluer, the grass was greener. The worries of yesterday were magically reduced to a manageable size, and brand new ideas and thoughts were born. Oddly enough, Mom’s words were like seeds planted in the night, now growing and blossoming inside me. Jay was very much alive. He was healthy, a bit fragile, but more alive than many kids my age who lived life mindlessly. If anything, this stupid disorder made him more alive. Made me more alive. I wanted to make memories with Jay— live each day to the fullest, laugh until my belly hurt, cry at sad movies with him, and watch the sunrise and the sunset whenever I could. Life was a gift, not to be taken for granted. It could be here one day and gone the next, or it could go on for a very long time.
